Thuja Emerald - Arborvitae Description
Hefty one gallon pots! Sold in value-priced sets of four plants to give you 12-14' of privacy!
Get the privacy you've always wanted quickly with Emerald arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis). This compact grower quickly forms a dense 8' tall evergreen screen!
This rapidly growing evergreen shrub can grow over 18" per year if given plenty of of water and fertilizer throughout the growing season.
Thuja Emerald is also extremely adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions and will thrive in both sandy and heavy clay garden soils!
Emerald Arborvitae also has extremely fragrant foliage that makes wonderful cut branches for holiday arrangements!
Create multi-seasonal color with Thuja Emerald as the perfect evergreen backdrop for long-blooming Knock Out roses and ornamental grasses.
Thuja Emerald thrives in full sun to part shade and can easily be pruned to any desired height that the garden design might require. I've even seen them planted in formal rose gardens on 18" centers to create that immediate 6' tall hedge.
A simple shearing once a year, in early spring, is all it takes to keep this colorful, adaptable, and fragrant evergreen shrub in bounds!
Emerald arborvitae even thrives in the intense heat and humidity of Atlanta, Georgia and can tolerate prolonged periods of drought after it becomes established!
Thujas or Arborvitaes are more drought tolerant than Leyland cypress with denser, more attractive foliage.

Soil: Best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soils. Tolerates somewhat wide range of soils and some dry conditions. Poorly drained and wet sites should be avoided, and it is very salt-sensitive.
Light: Full sun (6 hrs direct light daily), Partial sun/shade (4-6 hrs light daily)
Water: Keep moist, but do not over water. Appreciates well-drained soil.
Spacing: 2 - 3 ft
Fertilizing: Top dress in spring with a slow release, balanced fertilizer.
Winterizing: Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder zones. Tolerates wind once established and withstands heavy ice or snow. Darkens or bronzes slightly in the winter. Note -- The oldest, interior branchlike on an arborvitae normally turn brown and fall off in autumn. This aging process is different from drought stress, which on arborvitae appears on the tree outside the interior foliage as an abnormal yellowing or browning, known as flagging. This discoloration may not appear until a season or two after the drought stress was most severe.
Maintenance & pruning: Requires little or no pruning but can be sheared easily if necessary. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any die back.
ReviewsWrite a reviewInformation is Deceptive and Service is DishonestAndrew Leamon | May 20, 2019I bought 22 of these last year. When they arrived, they were much smaller than I expected. The reason was that the height measurement was from the bottom of the pot that they . arrived in. They were also at best at the very bottom of the height range including the root ball / pot. I called and they assured me that they would grow quickly and that if any of them did not survive the winter that they would replace them the next season. So, four of them did not survive the winter... Now when I call back they have changed their story and say that they only guarantee to replace the trees if you order in the fall, so I'm out of luck. I'm very dissatisfied with both of these dishonest practices. Shop elsewhere!!Owner Response: Hello Andrew, According to our records you purchased the Emeralds in May 2018 - our No Risk 30 Day Guarantee applied. Great Trees!Alan D. | Apr 12, 2018Thank you! The 24 Emerald Green Thujas arrived a little while ago...I can't believe how much the ones I purchased in 2016 have grown! They all look pretty healthy too...thanks again.
So Far So Good!Krista J Schweers | Mar 30, 2018The trees arrived in good condition and about 2 feet tall. They have been in the ground for about a month and seem to be doing alright so far. Looking forward to the privacy that they will give when full grown! Just bought three more for the other side of the yard.
Emerald thujaDarcy Duerfeldt | Mar 29, 2017I would not purchase trees from this company. I purchased 14 trees last fall and this spring looks like all of them have died.. What a waste of money. I also purchased around 52 thuja wintergreen and half of them are already not looking good either so would look else where when i have to order more trees...Owner Response: Darcy - Our warranty for fall planting is coverage of the plants until May 31 of the following year. We want to make sure plants survive the first winter while they are establishing their root system. Please call the office, as if received in the fall, they would still be covered under warranty.
Healthy Plants!Joyce C. | Apr 20, 2015I decided to give you guys a try, I just received my order of Hydrangea Fire and Ice. I was so impressed with the quality and condition of the plants that I decided to order more! These were very healthy and I think will do very well.
IMPRESSED!Lisa | Jun 12, 2013I just wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your company. I placed a big order for 70 Thuja Emerald trees and every single one of them arrived healthy and beautiful. Even the men I had planting them remarked how healthy they looked and couldn't believe I had them shipped from another state. I was afraid the plants might arrive all smashed and broken up and out of their pots due to shipping, but you packaged them so well taht despite some of the boxes being turned on their side and upside down all of the plants (and soil) remained intackt and in their pots. It's sade to say but it's rare that you find a company thoday that takes such pride and care in their work as your company so when I find one that does, I like to make sure that they know it. Thanks
