Description

Surfs up! 'Catch a Wave' mangave from the ART & SOL™ Proven Winners collection features wavy blue margins with dark speckles reminiscent of a deep blue ocean. The leaves stand upright, and the ends cascade downwards, adding a wavy and unique look to rock gardens or containers. We love how dimensional this native perennial is: the view from the top shows layers and layers of succulent-like leaves, while the side shows off the thickness and intriguing shape.

Wait, what is mangave? It's a hybrid that combines the color and texture of Manfreda with the habit of Agave. They come in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes, so there really is one for every garden. These delightful succulents are perennial in zones 9-11, but colder zones can grow them as annuals or bring them indoors as houseplants for winter. They're deer and rabbit-resistant, drought-tolerant, easy to grow, native to North America, and perfectly suited for containers.

How to Grow

Soil: Dry to average well-draining soil.
Light: Requires full sun (6+ hours sun) for the best growth and coloration.
Water: Drought tolerant once established, but still appreciates supplemental water during hot months.
Spacing: 20 inches apart
Fertilizing: If desired, apply a minimal amount of all-purpose garden fertilizer around the plant in early summer.
Winterizing: Keep dry through the winter. If growing outside hardiness zone, bring indoors for the winter until spring.
Maintenance & pruning: Requires little to no care. You may notice "pups" growing around the base. These can be removed and transplanted elsewhere.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
