Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Starting in late winter, you’ll see these long, straight stems peppered with silvery-pink buds. As the days get longer and warmer (even if only by a tiny bit), they lengthen into big, mysterious-looking black pussywillows. Perfect for cut flowers, fresh or dried! Kids especially love this super durable, easy-to-grow plant. It’s early bloom time is the perfect cure for the wintertime blues. Black Cat pussywillow is a large plant and should be given plenty of room to grow. It can be planted just about anywhere, and tolerates part shade, wet soil, and other challenging conditions. Uses: Hedges, landscaping, specimen.
 How To Grow Soil: Adaptable in terms of soil pH. Best in moist, even wet soil, but can take some dryness once established. Avoid very dry conditions, which will impact flower formation.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day) is best, but light shade is tolerated. Avoid dense shade from evergreens, where plants would be shaded in winter and early spring.
Water: Average to abundant.
Space: Min. 10' apart
Fertilizing: If desired, fertilize in early spring, once the ground has thawed, with a granular rose fertilizer.
Winterizing: No special care required.
Maintenance & Pruning: Pussywillows can tolerate a lot of pruning, and in fact, regular pruning is recommended for the best flower formation. After blooming is complete in spring, you can cut back to just a few inches from the ground. This seems dramatic but ensures the plant puts energy into growing big pussywillows and that they will be at a level you can enjoy instead of way out at the ends of the stems. If you do not wish to cut back this dramatically, cut back by at least half each year.
