Description

Bubble Up™ beautyberry (Callicarpa) truly lives up to its charming name, with its entire habit covered in vibrant purple berries from the base of the plant all the way to the top! While other beautyberry plants tend to experience a frost before fruiting all the way up the plant, Bubble Up™ is earlier to fruit, allowing you to experience all the vibrant purple berries in fall. Like other beautyberry plants, Bubble Up™ is exceptionally deer-resistant, so much so that it is certified Deer Proof™ by Proven Winners® ColorChoice Shrubs. No matter your plans for this fun shrub, it's sure to grab everyone's attention who lays eyes on it.

How to Grow

Soil: Beautybush is tolerant of a wide range of soil and tolerates drought once established (after 1-2 seasons in the ground).
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day).
Water: Moderate water is sufficient.
Space: Minimum 2-3 feet apart.
Fertilizing: Little fertilizer is needed. If little new growth emerges in spring, a bit of granular rose fertilizer can help it rebound more quickly.
Winterizing: A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is a good idea in winter, especially in colder parts of its range. Leave plant intact over winter.
Maintenance: Wait until new growth begins to emerge in spring to determine whether or not pruning is required. Plant may experience some dieback in cold climates, so cut above where new growth is emerging. May be pruned in spring in warm climates as well since it blooms and fruits on new wood.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
