Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

DescriptionWho said you need the space for a shrub or tree to enjoy dogwood flowers? Creeping dogwood (Cornus canadensis) is a perennial ground cover that forms a blanket of lush, oval foliage. In late spring, white bracts surround clusters of tiny green flowers, creating one large star-like bloom. Blossoms mature into clusters of fruits that persist through the fall. The fall show doesn’t stop there! The oval leaves take on shades of wine-red and purple.
This native ground cover is disease, deer, and rabbit resistant. It grows best in part sun, but handles shade with ease as well. Try planting it as an understory to trees or along pathways in your garden.DetailsBotanical name: Cornus canadensis Common name: Creeping Dogwood, Bunchberry Zone: 2 - 7 Sun exposure: Part sun (4-6 hours sun) to shade (> 6 hours sun) Height x width: 6-9" X 6-12" Flower color: White Foliage color: Green Season of interest: Late spring-fall Uses: Accent, Container gardening, Edging, Erosion control or Embankment, Ground cover, Massing, Rain garden, Rock garden, Under planting, Waterside, Woodland How To GrowSoil: Easily grown in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils. Light: Plants prefer some part afternoon shade in the southern growing zones. Foliage is lime green in shade. Water: Give a new plant a good soaking once a week during summer, unless rainfall is plentiful (more than 1" per week). Established plants can generally get by on less water, but most grow best if the soil remains evenly moist. Spacing: 18 inches Fertilizing: We recommend against fertilizing at planting time and during the first growing season. Plants need time to settle and root in before being pushed to grow. Most established plants grow best if fertilized with a light hand. We fertilize perennials just once -- in early spring -- with a light but even coverage of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (Osmocote), or organic fertilizer. Winterizing: No special care needed Maintenance & pruning: Allowed to grow, the plant's stems trail as much as 10 feet and root where their nodes touch the soil. Prune them as necessary to maintain a desirable length. Removing mature plants that spread too enthusiastically isn't difficult, thanks to their shallow roots.
Every single of my 30+ plants arrived in great shape. They are almost too well-packaged--it took some time to remove them from their protective materials.

I ordered 4 of these, and 3 are thriving. For the 4th that didn't make it, I sent 2 emails to GGP to ask for a replacement, and I never received a response. In the past, I had no issues with Customer Service, so I'm not sure if this is something specific to this year. I hope that this is just a blip. All of my other plants are very happy in their new homes.
Hello Virginia! I looked into your order and in our notes it says we got back to, I'm sorry to hear that the message never made it to you. Unfortunately, creeping dogwood is out of stock so we are not able to replace it but we will happily refund the price of that plant or substitute it with another plant. Give us a call and let us know how you'd like to proceed. We look forward to hearing from you!
