Description

We are so excited to be offering 'Galaxy Blue,' a very unique, hard-to-find HARDY Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus sp.) that's a perennial even in USDA zone 6. Enjoy clusters of true-blue blooms all summer long, hovering above a mound of neat, strappy leaves. They are outstanding as a cut flower and in the garden, and you'll have plenty to enjoy, thanks to its super long bloom time. 'Galaxy Blue' is not evergreen in zones 6 and 7 - it will disappear over winter - but will re-emerge in spring, ready to provide you another season of fabulous blue blooms.

How to Grow

Soil: Any well-drained soil will do.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun)
Water: Average moisture; tolerates drought once established. Do not overwater.
Spacing: 2-3 feet
Fertilizing: Not required. If more rapid growth is desired, apply a rose fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: 'Galaxy Blue' will go dormant over winter, unlike agapanthus in warm climates. This is normal and not a cause for concern. We do recommend a good 2-3" layer of mulch over the plant for winter, especially in zone 6.
Maintenance & pruning: Little needed. Cut flowers as desired for arrangements. If any dried portions of the plant remain in early spring, remove them before new growth begins.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
