Description

Have you been looking for a durable, shade-tolerant groundcover that's a little different than the rest? Try 'Hermann's Pride' lamium (Lamium galeobdolan)! Also known as archangel, deadnettle, and lamiastrum, this super-tough plant has stacked leaves spotted with metallic silver and spikes of bright yellow flowers. It's a unique combination of colors that brightens up any dull, troublesome area in the landscape, thanks to the sparkling silver spots. Though it looks delicate, it is deer resistant, unbothered by pests and diseases, and thrives in dry shade. It perfect for gardeners of any skill level. Yellow flowers emerge in early spring atop stems of silver & green leaves. Its charming blooms remain colorful for up to 2 months. 'Hermann's Pride' is incredibly versatile and problem-solving! Use on its own as a groundcover, or underplant around a tree. In the perennial garden, it pairs nicely with ferns, hostas, and heuchera.

How to Grow

Soil: Not finicky about soil. Grows well in dry conditions, but flowers and spreads more vigorously if it gets some moisture.
Light: Part shade to full shade. Foliage may decrease considerably in hot summer weather, and may scorch if grown in too much sun. Although plants tolerate light morning sun, they need afternoon shade.
Water: Average - tolerates quite dry conditions once established, though it may start to look poorly in very hot, dry conditions.
Spacing: 18 - 24 inches
Fertilizing: No special requirements. Apply a granular garden fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Winterizing: Dies back in winter. Remove damaged or dead foliage in early spring to make way for fresh spring growth.
Maintenance & Pruning: Evergreen in mild winter regions. Thin out plants in fall if they become too crowded.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
