Description
Camellias are flowering evergreen shrubs that feature romantic layered petals that arrive later in the season than other shrubs and perennials, extending the color beyond summer. Its large habit makes it an excellent specimen in the landscape, making a statement in late fall and early winter. This shrub can also be reliably grown down to zone 6b with special winter protection.

How to Grow
Light: Sun/part sun/shade. Can grow in full to part sun; the hotter your climate, the more shade it can take.
Water: Average water needs. Plants that are drought stressed will be more susceptible to pests and diseases, so proper care goes a long way.
Space: Min. 5’
Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring, once the ground has thawed, with a granular rose fertilizer. If your soil is not acidic, more frequent fertilization may be necessary.
Winterizing: No special treatment is required in warmer areas; 2-3"" of mulch is recommended in cooler climates. In USDA zone 6b, plant only in protected spots or protect with burlap or wire cages filled with oak leaves.
Maintenance & Pruning: Little to no pruning required. May be pruned to shape if desired in late winter/early spring.
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like.
