Description

Most reblooming hydrangeas grow relatively large, making them too big for some landscapes, but not Let's Dance® Blue Jangles® hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)! This hydrangea grows in a tight, compact habit making it perfect for just about any space, even containers! But don't let its compact frame fool you; it's still covered head to toe in large, show-stopping petal-packed blooms! Sturdy stems hold up mophead blooms that first appear in early summer and then again into autumn; enjoy fresh flowers for months on end! Let's Dance Blue Jangles hydrangea will bloom blue or pink, depending on the soil; however, you can be assured of rich, vibrant color, whether your soil conditions tend toward acidic (blue blooms) or neutral to alkaline (pink blooms). You can't go wrong adding this prolific bloomer to your garden!

How to Grow

Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Mulch to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures.
Light: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. In the South, plants require afternoon shade.  Intolerant of drought, with foliage tending to decline considerably in dry conditions
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet.
Spacing: 2-3 feet
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with a granular rose fertilizer. Make a second application in early summer if desired.  Winterizing: Do not prune. A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is sufficient winter protection.
Maintenance & Pruning: Avoid pruning except to remove any obviously dead wood in spring, when the new growth has emerged. Though this type of hydrangea blooms on old and new wood, it's best to avoid pruning it for the most flowers and best performance. Mature plants may be selectively thinned, removing one-third of the oldest branches each late winter.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
