Description

A fan favorite for fall color and more! Sedum sieboldii adds multi-season interest to your favorite patio containers and pathways. Highly drought tolerant and thriving in a variety of soils (even poor ones), this sedum is tough as nails; you can sit back and relax knowing once you plant it, all you have to do is enjoy its color-changing display. While it looks great all summer long with its rounded green foliage edged in pink, it's truly a sight to behold in fall. Its late summer flower display is a signal for the beauty to come when its green leaves turn rich shades of pink, red, orange, and yellow. This flush of fall color is what sets Sedum sieboldii apart. Apart from the stunning color show, you'll even enjoy an influx of butterflies in your garden when a galaxy of pink star-shaped flowers bloom. Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, and you won't have to worry about much else, even deer! This sedum is hardy from zones 3-9, making it perfect for just about any garden.

How to Grow

Soil: Needs well-draining soil. Thrives even in sandy to gravelly soils of moderate to low fertility.
Light: Does best in full sun but appreciates some protection from harsh sun and heat exposure in very hot summer regions.
Water: Medium to dry. Considered drought-tolerant once established. Overwatering will impair growth.
Spacing: 1 - 2 ft.
Fertilizing: On average, sedum seldom needed to be fertilized. A handful of all-purpose granular fertilizer sprinkled on the soil each spring is generally all that is needed for poorer soils. If growing in rich soil, it should only be fertilized every other year. Dry granular fertilizers must be watered into the soil.
Winterizing: Does not need mulch in the winter. Remove the debris (such as the remains of showy sedums) from under and around your plants in the late fall and continue to remove any debris as it accumulates. Small animals and bugs may take home in accumulated debris during cold weather.
Maintenance & Pruning: Can cut back in Autumn, after flowering. Divide in spring.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
