Description

Microbiota decussata, or Siberian cypress, is a dwarf evergreen that resembles a juniper with feathery, scale-like foliage. The graceful, lacy shaped leaves that turn copper in winter and reverts to green again in spring. Don't fret over harsh winters! This ultra-hardy evergreen can survive the shade and harsh temperatures of -40 F or below. Plus, it's highly drought-tolerant and easy to grow, making it nearly indestructible. A single plant will gradually grow to form a colorful, evergreen carpet 18" tall and up to 7' wide after a few years. Try planting it as a ground cover for banks and slopes!

How to Grow

Soil: Likes moist, well-draining soils, but it is very adaptable to poor, dry soils in sun and wind-exposed sites.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun) to to shade (<4 hours direct sun/day).
Water: Water regularly until established. Drought tolerant in cold climates. Make sure to water during the hottest days of summer, especially in the south.
Spacing: You can plant at almost any spacing as plants will fill in.
Fertilizing: Generally unnecessary, but you can feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
Winterizing: No special care is needed. Fallen autumn leaves can be raked from the plant without damage to it.
Maintenance & pruning: Can handle trimming in early spring if necessary.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
