Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

I have never had this happen before. Two plants of the three I purchased. have lost all their leaves and have not recuperated! Very sad! And expensive!

This is a replacement plant the first one didn't survive. I was happy that I received a replacement. The barberry was packaged well and seems to be thriving after planting.
Arrived in good shape and planted them. We had a late cold snap and I was worried they wouldn’t survive, but they did. Very pleased with the color.
This the brightest boldest barberry I've ever seen or grown. From spring to fall it has been an electric orange-red to red with only a hint of green deep down. I'm growing it in a clay pot, made it without damage thru this bitter winter, down to 0. Growth so far is slow so I don't expect it will get but maybe 3-4 ft.
Hi Dennis, aren't the colors so vivid! We love the bold foliage and pop of color this Barberry brings to the garden. You can expect this plant with a dwarf habit to grow to 2.5'x 2.5'. Happy Gardening!
No problems with this plant this far. It's small, but was well packed, damp, and appeared very healthy. Bright color!
