Description

All the beauty of a flowering cherry tree in just a fraction of the space! Zuzu® Flowering Cherry Shrub (Prunus incisa) is a unique selection from Proven Winners that is covered in pink powderpuff flowers that make cherries such a beloved springtime icon. However, it naturally grows as a narrow column, so it doesn't take as much space as a conventional flowering cherry. It can easily be incorporated into landscapes and gardens, including very small ones. After the blooms fall (and create that memorable, romantic carpet of petals!), neat little toothed leaves give the plant texture the rest of the season. Zuzu cherry is very lovely for a cut branch and can be forced in winter for a springtime preview.

How to Grow

Soil: Not fussy about soil type or pH; any well-drained spot will do.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part sun (4-6 hours sun)
Water: Average
Spacing: 2-3 feet
Fertilizing: Little needed; if desired, apply a granular rose fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended all year long, especially in winter. Branches can be cut for forcing starting in mid-February in most areas.
Maintenance & pruning: Thanks to its naturally dense, narrow habit, little pruning is needed. If desired, prune immediately after flowering since it blooms on old wood.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
