Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

DescriptionWhen it comes to shrubs, it's hard to find ones that are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions while providing ornamental value throughout most of the year but, Blue Muffin® viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) does precisely that. Did we mention it's native too? Crisp white flower clusters appear mid-summer and look stunning in contrast to its dark glossy green leaves. In fall, its namesake blue fruit arrives (with a pollinator plant - a different Viburnum dentatum type) and studs the plant in a stunning sea of blue that persists through winter.
Blue Muffin makes a wonderful screen or hedge plant and is beloved by both birds and butterflies alike. Plant in groups of 3 or 5 if you need to shield a view from a neighbor or want a salt-tolerant shrub near a road. Blue Muffin is more compact than other arrowhead viburnum, making it perfect for smaller landscapes and gardens. Plus, it's incredibly low-maintenance, requiring very little work from you to enjoy all this plant has to offer.DetailsBotanical name:Viburnum dentatum 'Christom' Common name: Arrowood viburnum Zone: 3 - 8 Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun), Part-sun (4-6 hours sun) Height x width: 5-7' tall x 5-7' wide Flower color: White with blue fruit Foliage color: Green Season of Interest: Summer-fall Bloom time: Spring Features: Wet soils, Proven Winners, privacy & screening, native, heat tolerant, dry soils, drought tolerant, deer resistant, cold tolerant Uses: Background, border, erosion control or embankment, foundation planting, hedge, massing, ornamental, privacy, slopes, specimen.
