More Information

Description One look and you will fall in love! 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub (Calycanthus hybrid) is one of those plants that, once you've seen it, you must have it. Big, cupped flowers in summer look like a dark red magnolia. They begin to appear in early summer and here in Michigan, continue to bloom all summer long (in hot climates, they may taper off during the height of summer). This is a very large shrub, covered in big, glossy, green leaves, so it's perfect for seasonal coverage or privacy. As you may guess by its name, sweetshrub is generally fragrant, but the scent varies widely depending on the age of the bloom, the time of day, and the weather. We think they smell like apples warmed by the sun, but other people smell different things (pineapple, bubblegum) and others smell nothing at all. It's an adventure in fragrance! Details Botanical name: Calycanthus x 'Aphrodite'
Patent: USPP 16,098
Common name: Sweetshrub
Zone: 5 - 9
Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun) to part sun (4-6 hrs of sun)
Height x width: 5-10' tall and wide
Flower color: White
Foliage color: Green
Season of interest: Spring
Uses: Flower gardens, Landscaping, Edging, Ground cover, Slopes
How To Grow Soil:  Any average soil will do; avoid extreme wet or dry conditions.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day) to part shade (4-6 hours/day)
Water:  Moderate moisture; tolerates dry conditions once established, but flowering is best when not stressed.
Space:  6-7' apart
Fertilizing:  Seldom needed; apply a granular garden or rose fertilizer in early spring if desired
Winterizing:  A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended. In zone 5 - and even in USDA zone 6 in cold winters - this plant may die back to the ground. However, it will re-emerge from the roots. This is why there is such a wide range of height and width on this plant. Expect it to become quite large in warmer climates.
Maintenance: This plant can be pruned as needed, but as it matures, controlling its height may become difficult. Prune in spring, before the new growth begins to emerge, if you wish. Makes a very nice cut flower.

Not native

This is not a US native plant. It is a hybrid. If purchasing natives, please do the research and find ones native to your area, not just the US, if you want the benefits of native plants.

Hello! Thank you for your note. You are correct in that Aphrodite Sweetshrub is not a pure native plant. However, it is a native cultivar, a plant created from two native plant parents. While there is differing opinions on natives v. cultivars, Great Garden Plants still classifies this plant as a native, due to its native origins. Most of us here at GGP prefer to grow gardens with native and native cultivars rather than non-native species. You are also correct in that native plants are native to different areas of the country. It is a good idea to research which plants are native to your area and plan your garden to include those plants. Happy Gardening!

Great

These little cuties are thriving right next to the mature one I planted last year (which is now about 4' tall!). They came packaged perfectly and have been doing well. Can't wait to watch them play catch up with the older one next season!

The plants look good so far.

I will recommend them to my friends.
