More Information

Description The bold burgundy- and chocolate-colored foliage of Chocolate Chip Bugleweed (Ajuga) steals the spotlight from other garden ground covers. Spikes of bright-blue blooms in late spring and early summer accompany the bold evergreen foliage to give your garden an eclectic vibe. This foolproof perennial groundcover will make gardening a breeze by suppressing weeds as it spreads through your garden. It's so low maintenance; nearly all you have to do is plant and enjoy! Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' can be planted in containers, on slopes, beneath trees, and in small spaces. It looks especially lovely when grown around rocks or stepping stones. If you're looking to add an easy and unique twist to your garden, this plant is perfect for you. Plus, who could say no to chocolate chips?

Common name: Bugleweed, carpet bugle, bugle, ground pine, carpenter's herb
Zone: 4 - 9
Sun exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun), part-sun (4-6 hours sun), shade (< 4 hours sun)
Soil type: Average
Soil Moisture: Average to moist
Height x width: 3" x 12"

Foliage color: Burgundy and chocolate
Season of interest: Late spring
Bloom time: Spring, summer
Features: Rabbit resistant, heat tolerant, ground covers, drought tolerant, deer resistant, cold tolerant, best for beginners
Uses: Container gardening, edging, ground cover, rock garden, stepping stones, small spaces, slopes
How To Grow Soil: Prefers moist soils with good drainage but tolerates moderately dry conditions.  Favors acidic soils with a pH in the range of 3.7 to 6.5.
Light: Will grow in full sun or shade, but the best foliage color usually occurs in part-sun locations (at least 3-4 hours of sun per day).
Water: Easily grown in average soils.
Spacing: Space plants 6-9" apart, but be careful to not plant too deep. The crown should never be covered with soil, or the plant may rot.
Fertilizing: Ajugas seldom need fertilizing. Over-fertilizing can encourage crown rot.
Winterizing: No specific care is needed.
Maintenance & pruning: Every couple of years, thin out crowded groupings to reduce the chance of crown rot. Pruning is not required but can be done to rejuvenate foliage after flowering. Larger plantings may be mowed if they become unruly. Plants can be propagated by dividing established clumps in the fall or early spring.

Flowered quickly, arrived in great condition

I know the quality of a shipped item is more a reflection on the transportation company than the company you buy the product from, I feel it necessary to mention that my plants arrived in great condition. There was a lot of care put into making sure they arrived in good condition. I bought 4 plants, 2 of them started flowering just 2 weeks after I planted them. I’m a big fan of this company.

Blooming Already!

I ordered 4 of these to be a filler/groundcover for my new berm and all arrived healthy. One of them is even blooming already (in late summer)! I did not expect any blooms this year, so that is a happy surprise!

Fantastic groundcover! Buy early in spring.

I have purchased multiple flats of this bugleweed ground cover and I love them! They are the best!
First, thank you, Great Garden Plants, for offering these in smaller plugs! I was buying larger plants from my local nursery, and it would've cost a fortune to cover the large area I'm trying to tackle. The tray with small plugs have deep root systems that seem to really help them settle well and quickly. They are shaped like a bullet (curved) which avoids the sharp root-bound corners of other flats.
Advice: Buy early in spring if possible! I noticed a big difference between the first set that I bought early in the season, and later ones. These tend to tangle with one another and are harder to tease apart. Be patient! They are hardy, and even if you need to gently tear them apart, they will do fine. Also, be understanding! They are tangling with one another because they are healthy and want to spread, even in the tray!
I water quite regularly at first (as I do with any new plants) until they get settled. This attention seems to really help them grow fast. In just a few weeks these small plugs caught up to the size of the plants from my local nursery that were 4 times the cost per plant.
Great buy. Beautiful plants. Color is stunning. Easy care. Nice lawn alternative.
