More Information

Description Grow your own delicious fruit without having to dig up a big ol' berry patch! Yezberry Honey Bunch Japanese haskap (Lonicera caerulea) is a neat and tidy bush that you could easily fit into your landscaping. It naturally grows to 3-5' tall and wide. One of the very first plants to bloom in spring, its tubular yellow flowers provide valuable pollen and nectar to insects on those first warm days of the season. Soon, oval-shaped, blue-green leaves cover the plant, and the berries, still green, begin to swell. By early summer (mid-late June here in Michigan), they turn a beautiful blue color and it's nearly harvest time! How do the berries taste? A bit like a cross between a raspberry and a blueberry, though they aren't related to either of those notoriously-finicky-to-grow plants. They have the sweetness of a raspberry with a hint of pleasant tartness. We also love that the skin kind of dissolves when you eat them - it doesn't come off and stick to your teeth like a blueberry does. The seeds are tiny but don't get stuck in your teeth like raspberries. They are delicious and definitely worth growing! Note: pollinator is required. Plant any of the other Yezberry varieties within 50' of this one for pollination. Both plants will get fruit. Details Botanical Name: Lonicera caerulea 'Kaido'
Patent: USPP28,662
Common Name: Japanese Haskap
Zone: 3-7
Sun Exposure: Full sun (min. 6 hrs/day), part sun (4-6 hrs/day)
Height x Width: 3-5' x 3-5'
Flower Color: Yellow
Foliage Color: Green
Season of Interest: Summer
Uses: Edible, deer resistant.
How To Grow Soil: Moist but well-drained soils are best. Can tolerate some dryness once established.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day), part sun (4-6 hrs/day)
Water:  Average. For best fruit quality, plants should not experience water stress - either too much or too little - from bloom time through harvest.
Spacing: Spacing 3-4', plant any two Yezberry® haskaps within 25' of one another for best fruit to set.
Fertilizing: Little needed. If desired, fertilize in early spring, once the ground has thawed, with a granular rose fertilizer.
Winterizing: A good 2-3" layer of mulch is recommended.
Maintenance & Pruning: Plants should not be pruned until they have spent 3 years in ground and then immediately after harvest ONLY. HARVESTING -berries begin to ripen in early summer, around the same time as strawberries. They turn dark blue before they have reached peak sweetness, so taste a berry for flavor before proceeding with harvest. If not sweet enough, wait a few more days.

Received the replacement the same day I posted my review... it looked great then, still looks great after planting! Thanks so much!

dead Honey Bunch Japanese Haskap

This plant was one of three different varieties of Japanese Haskap bushes I purchased. It was the least thrifty looking of the trio but I planted them all immediately, according to the planting instructions. The other 2 look good with lots of new green growth but this one died straight away and is nothing but a dried up, spindly mess. I contacted customer service but have yet to receive an answer.

Hello Laurie!
Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. It looks like we sent a replacement plant your way! Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns, we're happy to help.
