More Information

Description Fill your landscape with the vibrant coral flowers of Coral Drift® (Rosa sp.).  If you are struggling with other shrubs, you might want to consider cold and heat hardy Drift Roses; they're incredibly low maintenance and durable. Growing 18-24" tall x 3-4 feet wide, their wide-spreading habit makes them ideal as a groundcover offering five months of continuous color!  They even perform well under the intense sun and heat of southern gardens. Coral Drift is a luscious pastel color that won't fade in the heat. It offers just the right pop of color where you need it. These roses are excellent on slopes or banks where their tightly knit roots help prevent erosion. Add continuous color to an entryway or throughout a perennial border, or fill up your favorite containers on the patio—they're a real favorite for an informal garden where they can weave throughout the bed. They were introduced by Conard-Pyle, who brought us world-famous Knock out roses. Drift roses are a cross between miniature roses and ground cover roses. Details Botanical name: Rosa 'Meidrifora'
Patent #: USPP 19,148
Common name: Rose
Zone: 4 - 9
Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun)
Height x width: 1.5' x 2.5'
Flower color: Coral
Foliage color: Green
Season of Interest: Summer-fall
Bloom time: Spring, summer
Features: Suitable for slopes, heat tolerant, ground covers, container plants, cold tolerant
Uses: Accent, border, container gardening, cottage gardening, foundation planting, ground cover, hedge, massing, ornamental, specimen.
How To Grow Soil: Prefers moist, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Roses benefit from the addition of compost, aged manure, or leafmold to the planting soil.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun)
Water: Try to keep the soil evenly moist, especially in their first growing season. Never allow the foliage to remain wet into the evening; water early in the day.
Spacing: 3 ft.
Fertilizing: To keep the flowers coming, feed your roses with a fertilizer blended especially for roses. This can be done after each bloom cycle.
Winterizing: Spread a layer of composted manure, compost, or shredded leaves over the base of the plant in late fall after the ground freezes. Covering these mounds and the lower parts of the bushes with evergreen boughs will add protection. Pull the mounding material away from the stem as new growth emerges in spring. Prune injured branches over when new buds emerge in spring.
Maintenance & pruning: Prune to remove deadwood, to control or direct growth, and to promote flowering. Wait until growth breaks in early spring before pruning. Every 2 or 3 years, remove about one-third of the old branches to stimulate new, fresh growth. Remove faded flowers to encourage blooming.

Coral Drift is just what I wanted for my rock garden! Love the color of her first little blossom. I'm very excited to see how she grows!

Purchased 3 Coral Drift Roses for gf's birrthday

GF, is happy. They have been in the ground in Jacksonville NC for a couple / three weeks. (now 4/24/23) They have doubled in size. The coral color is not available elsewhere in local nurseries. I might have paid a bit more to have them shipped from Michigan, local / similar cost about half but the thing is... we got what we wanted and it seems like they are very healthy and a few dollars more seems well spent.

Coral Drift amazes

I’m not sure why I’m surprised, because this is my typical experience with everything I order from Great Garden, but my six Coral Drift plants came out of the box looking fantastic, showed new growth within 4 days of being planted, and now on day 18 every single one of them is blooming! And my soil is pretty horrible here! Healthy and happy plants, are going to be spectacular as they start to mound in my landscape where I have them behind an old long cedar tree log, and they’ll drape over the log. I’m so pleased.

Want more blooms

Was hoping the plants would be blooming a lot more. They look very healthy and I've applied an organic fertilizer to encourage more blooms. So far blooms have been scarce. Looking forward to next year when they'll be more established.

Hello! When transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development.

We do not recommend fertilizing this late in the season as it promotes tender new growth that can be damaged by frost. We have a Rose care guide on our blog here that you might find helpful: https://blog.greatgardenplants.com/questions-answered-series-roses-rosa/

Happy Gardening!
