Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

I just placed an order for some more of this plant. We've had some on one side of our front porch for years and have loved them, they are very showy and have done great. Last year we decided to take out a different version of Hydrangea that was in front of the house and to replace them with these - the first ones I ordered (came in gallons) they arrived, looked great and have done well - in the fall we decided to add on some more, by then only the quart size was available, they arrived small, struggled and then every one died, one by one, side by side. So I'm ordering more to replace them and are hoping that these will be better and will work out better than the last batch did, if not I won't re-order them again.
Hello! We're sorry to hear that some of your hydrangeas died! Please email pictures of the plant to firstname.lastname@example.org, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible. Rest assured, we do have a 60-day guarantee on all of our plants. If you received your plants within that timeframe, we will be happy to apply your warranty once we receive the pictures. Happy Gardening!
Ordered some plants and specifically requested they be delivered after a certain date, because we were out of town. They arrived a week early and were dried out and useless. Contacted customer service and they promised to replace the order. They did, but crammed two plants in each container. The plants will not grow. I will never purchase anything from them, ever again.
The plants came bigger than I expected for 1 quart size. These plants have grown about 6 inches now. Our summer was unusually hot this year. The ones without afternoon shade didn’t grow as good as the plants in afternoon shade.
I purchased two Invincibelle Spirit II hydrangeas in the quart size. Plants arrived healthy but small. They've been in the ground for about 6 weeks here in zone 7a and have almost doubled in size, now about 8-10 inches tall. No straggly branches or fallen leaves. I don't expect flowering until next summer. I've been giving the plants plenty of water. I fed with Espoma Bio-Tone when they were planted in mid-April. I plan to fertilize with Rose-Tone soon (early June). Overall I am happy with my purchase, just wish I could have afforded the more mature gallon size plants.
I was very surprised that this plant was such a fail. Last fall, I planted the Invincibelle Spirit II along with five other hydrangeas into a new big raised container bed. The other five are thriving but the Invincibelle did not leaf out. Sigh. Now I have a "hole" and whatever I put there will be a year behind the other hydrangeas.
