More Information

Description We are so excited to be offering 'Galaxy Blue,' a very unique, hard-to-find HARDY Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus sp.) that's a perennial even in USDA zone 6. Enjoy clusters of true-blue blooms all summer long, hovering above a mound of neat, strappy leaves. They are outstanding as a cut flower and in the garden, and you'll have plenty to enjoy, thanks to its super long bloom time. 'Galaxy Blue' is not evergreen in zones 6 and 7 - it will disappear over winter - but will re-emerge in spring, ready to provide you another season of fabulous blue blooms. Details Botanical name: Agapanthus 'Galaxy Blue'
Patent #: USPP 31,421
Common name: Lily of the Nile
Zone: 6 - 10
Sun exposure: Sun
Height x width: 36-40" x 28-30"
Flower color: Blue
Foliage color: Green
Season of interest: Summer
Uses: Edging, Flower gardens, Wildlife gardens, Native plant gardens
How To Grow Soil: Any well-drained soil will do.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun)
Water: Average moisture; tolerates drought once established. Do not overwater.
Spacing: 2-3 feet
Fertilizing: Not required. If more rapid growth is desired, apply a rose fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: 'Galaxy Blue' will go dormant over winter, unlike agapanthus in warm climates. This is normal and not a cause for concern. We do recommend a good 2-3" layer of mulch over the plant for winter, especially in zone 6.
Maintenance & pruning: Little needed. Cut flowers as desired for arrangements. If any dried portions of the plant remain in early spring, remove them before new growth begins.

Hopeful for the future

My Agapanthus arrived in good condition. After planting, it had a hard time adjusting to its new home. Seems to have slowed the decline, and hopeful it will take off next season.

Love!

I fell in love with agapanthus in So Cal…they are every where! I bought some bulbs and grew them indoors in winter, outdoors in summer. Lots of foliage no blooms. I was so excited to find a winter hardy variety to try! I planted in spring 2020 and got a few blooms the first year. I mulched them with oak leaves for the winter north of Boston and held my breath. It took a long time for them to break through in spring 2021…or maybe it was because I was hovering and checking every day! 😀. I fed them and added worm castings and voila….they just about doubled in size and tons of beautiful blue flowers! So Cal meets MA!

"Sleep, Creep, Leap!"

I'm giving this plant/purchase 3 stars... for now...
If the old adage is true:"Sleep, Creep, Leap!", it is certainly true in my case with my Lily of the Nile/Galaxy Blues. They have literally not changed since I planted them in June. There is no new growth, not even new leaves. They are very green and very firm so they're doing well (apparently) but again no growth. I'm hoping to see a change maybe before the end if Summer but certainly by Spring. I'll keep you posted. Thank you for asking. Who knows my rating may actually change to 5 stars!

Expectantly Yours,
