More Information

Description We've never seen a coneflower (or Echinacea) quite like Color Coded® 'One in a Melon' with its unique petal and cone coloration. The flowers aren't quite yellow and certainly aren't orange. Instead, they're a juicy cantaloupe hue that looks mouthwatering in the landscape! The flowers bloom all summer long and keep their refreshing color even through the heat. Pollinators flock to the blooms in summer, followed by birds in the fall.

We love the Color Coded™ series from Proven Winners for their impressive basal branching, heavy flowering, and horizontally held petals. This drought-tolerant perennial resists deer and is a breeze to care for, making it perfect for gardeners of any skill level to enjoy.
Details Botanical name: Echinacea x 'One in a Melon'
Patent #: PP35153
Common name: Coneflower, echinacea
Zone: 4 – 8
Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun), part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x width: 24-26″ x 18-20″
Flower color:Yellow-orange
Foliage color: Green
Season of Interest: Summer-fall
Bloom time: Summer, fall
Features: Proven Winners, heat tolerant, fragrant, drought tolerant, deer resistant, container plants, best for beginners
Uses: Border, cottage gardening, massing, naturalizing, pollinator specimen, wildflower
How To Grow Soil: Any well-drained soil will do.
Light: Full sun. Plant them in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of full sun a day. Can tolerate light shade, but performs best in full sun. If planted in too much shade, plants may flop or strain to reach the sun.
Water: Average. Water regularly the first season to encourage good root growth. Though coneflowers handle heat and dry conditions well once established, they appreciate regular watering and flower more if they are not stressed.
Spacing: 16 – 20 inches
Fertilizing: Little needed. Over fertilizing will cause spindly growth, so once in the spring with a granular garden fertilizer is more than sufficient.
Winterizing: Avoid damp spots. Do not heap mulching over crowns in winter, as this can cause rot. Leave the foliage and old flowers standing for winter (birds enjoy the seed heads), then trim back or remove spent foliage in early spring before new growth emerges.
Maintenance & Pruning: Once planted, they are best left alone, as they do not transplant well. Deadheading (snipping off the spent blooms) is not necessary but does increase new flower production.

I feel like it is too hot in this area right now for anything to grow well. I have tried very hard to keep my plants alive but not much luck.

The plant was small to begin with and did not survive. Hopefully it will come back in the spring.
