Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description Dappled willow (Salix integra) is adored for its tri-colored foliage with a stunning combination of pink, white, and light green hues. As leaves mature, they take on more cream and green coloration. The color doesn't stop there! Stems turn bright red in the fall, providing appealing winter interest. This compact willow cultivar features naturally weeping branches that form an elegant habit. The branches are always moving with the breeze. Since it's native to the riverbanks of Asia, it grows well in moist, well-draining soils. Uses: Accent, container gardening, cottage gardening, massing, ornamental, specimen How To Grow Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-draining soils. It will tolerate poor soil but may not produce ideal growth and color.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun). The best color develops in full sun. In hotter climates, they appreciate afternoon shade.
Water: Grows best when the soil is consistently moist. Try to maintain a regular water schedule by supplementing rainfall, but don't overwater!
Spacing: 5 - 7 ft
Fertilizing: Generally unnecessary, but a slow-release fertilizer can be applied in early spring if soils are poor, growth is slow, or foliage color is dull.
Winterizing: No special care going into winter. Wait to prune until early spring.
Maintenance & pruning: Handles pruning and shearing, which promotes better color and maintains a manageable size. Prune during dormancy in the early spring. You may hard prune it down to about 12" every few years, which will produce a lot of regrowth and a very dense plant. Thin branches for a more open form.

Underwhelmed and disappointed

The small shrub arrived looking rather tired and without many leaves. Unfortunately, it hasn't done much better after planting. All other plants I've received from this company have all arrived in excellent condition and are doing very well. I didn't want to make a complaint because this was a free plant that was sent to me due to a mistake made in a prior order.

Excellent Healthy Plants Doing Really Well

I bought 5 Tricolor Dappled Willow plants. They arrived quickly and in great shape. I live in Zone 9 which Great Garden Plants considers unsuitable for these plants, but having already bought 5 of these from another, more well known company, which were/are growing well, I got them anyway.

I planted them quickly and within a short time they were already producing new growth that is more bushy than my previous purchase from elsewhere.

This year our Florida weather has been exceptionally and unusually dry and the sun has been brutal. There has been little to no cloud cover so I have been watering my plants every day morning and evening.

I lost one plant and that was my fault because the area in which I placed it was less shaded than the others and the plant was under a lot of stress from the intense UV and heat.

All I can say is that I am very happy with my purchase and will be buying more plants from this company. So thank you. I

All but 1 died 3 days after I received

Either they had a fungus or they were terribly overwater before shipping, but they didn't make it 3 days after I received them. Very disappointing.
