Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description The artistic Japanese painted fern (Athyrium nipponicum) will make your garden feel like a painted mural. The distinctive soft gray leaves with maroon midribs add dimension to your understory.  Silver hues pick up light in the shade. It clearly earned its place as the 2004 Perennial Plant of the Year! This plant only looks hard to care for. It is easily grown in rich, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade, but is more accepting of sun if the site is consistently moist. Spacing: 1.5 - 2 ft apart
Fertilizing: Annual application of compost. Inorganic fertilizers may burn roots.
Winterizing: Leaves should be trimmed to the ground in late fall or early spring.

All of my plants arrived wilted and brown. Tried to revive, but all died. I can send pictures if you would like to see

Beautiful!

The Japanese Painted Fern arrived in great condition. It was packed well and was a very healthy size upon receipt. Unfortunately, I let it get too dry before I planted it in the garden, and all of the foliage died. I decided I would water it well hoping the rootstock survived and plant it in my garden thinking maybe it would live. It did! It is currently filling out beautifully and looks wonderfully happy in its new home. Thank you, GGP, for another healthy plant strong enough to survive my lack of care!

I hope they pull through!

Arrived yesterday 3 showed up looking ok. One was totally wilted.
Unboxed them, watered them and placed them in my mud room out of direct sunlight. Today they are all wilted. Hoping they make a comeback :( any tips or suggestions to save them would be helpful

2 of 3 were great!

One of the plants was very dried out looking and wilted. The soil in the pot was dry, while the others were moist and heavy. The outer packing was really well done and very protective. My only complaint is that all the plants that I have ordered from GG have plastic wrapped around the stem and the pot that is very hard to remove without damaging the plant. Maybe not use that heavy duty clip to hold it in place? Takes scissors to cut the plastic and it still can't be removed from the pot.
