Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Healthy plant

When I ordered cloudburst phlox I was expecting a small gnarly looking plant that I would have to nurse back to health. I was wrong. I received 2 healthy, well packed plants that were a descent size. The plants can even had flowers on it. My friends and neighbors were all surprised how healthy my plants were especially coming through the mail. I have ordered plants from other stores online before and this was by far the best experience and healthiest plants. I would order again.

Burst of color

I planted these beauties about 1 month ago, pairing three of them with sensational lavender in 3 large containers. Starting to see color. Yay. The several I planted in the ground are bursting too. I love them with my luminary tall phlox I the garden too.

Not my favorite phlox

I had no issues with the plants that were shipped to me, they arrived healthy and we're planted in my garden in September last year. Great garden plants has generally been very good and stands behind their warranty in my experience. My issue is more with the habit of this variety of phlox. I expect very good things from Proven Winners varieties, but this one has disappointed me. It has very sparse foliage and in general is very flimsy looking. You would have to plant a big drift of these very close together to achieve a more full look. I also purchased the PW Opening act phlox and planted those in a different location and have the exact same critique. To me they don't have the full look of the older varieties of phlox. I could see these working if you planted them amongst other types of plants whose foliage hid the weak looking foliage and stems of these phlox and just had the flowers peeking up above. But overall not impressed with the habit and look of these plants.

As mentioned on our website, we ship young plants with well established root systems. It's hard to say for certain why you're not seeing the growth that you desire. I'm sure that you're aware, so many factors such as weather, soil type, watering, fertilizing, and sunlight all come into play. Perhaps you're familiar with the old saying about plants: first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously.
