Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description This hard-working evergreen ground cover is a handsome, low-maintenance way to keep down weeds. Growing well in sun, shade, or anywhere in between, we especially love it with spring-flowering bulbs like crocus and daffodils planted beneath to provide peeks of color in April and May.

 How To Grow Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, but tolerates a wide range of soils, even poor and sandy/dry, if regularly watered during times of drought. Does not tolerant extremely wet conditions.
Light: Sun tolerant in cool northern zones. In hot summer areas, plant in part sun.
Water: Best with regular water - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. Tolerates dry shade once plants are established.
Spacing: 12 to 18 inches apart.
Fertilizing: If desired, fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for trees and shrubs.
Winterizing: Nothing special required. In severe winters, evergreen foliage may get damaged, but fresh new growth will replace it in spring.
Maintenance & Pruning: Little pruning is needed, but the plant may be shaped as desired. It can be pruned at any time but is best done in fall.

Eradicate, Do not plant

This invasive species should NOT be sold by any reputable grower. I'm trying to eradicate it in my yard in MA and I see it in the local conservation land. It is quite vigorous and will quickly overtake native ground species. Please consider removing this item from your inventory

I'm sorry that you have had trouble with Wintercreeper in your garden. Horrible, Horrible invasive plant

I would give it a negative review if it were possible. This terribly invasive plant has destroyed everything in my yard. It's killing trees and has killed my entire lawn. I've fought it for 20 years unsuccessfully. I've been told repeatedly by arborists that the only way to kill it is by using commercial chemicals that will kill everything, including all plants, worms, bugs, birds and other small animals. It would also sicken my cat. I am unable to have a vegetable garden or nice flower beds because of this plant. It is horrible. Buying and planting it is only spreading this issue. BTW - I'm in Ohio

Hi Amy, I'm sorry that you've had trouble with Wintercreeper in your garden. It doesn't look like you purchased the plants from us. If you'd like to remove it from your garden, our horticulture expert recommends doing so in small batches by cutting back the foliage and raking out the roots. She just removed some from her garden as well!

First time ordering plants on line!

The wintercreeper plants arrived safely - I really appreciated the way they were packed, including the instructions for handling after they arrived. The plants were very healthy looking, fuller than anticipated. They are thriving now and I can't wait for them to fill in the space where planted.
