Description

Dare to be different - plant Laced Up elderberry (Sambucus nigra). This selection from Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs is unlike anything you've seen before: it naturally grows as a narrow column of finely dissected purple foliage. That columnar habit makes it a real space-saver in the landscape, and it takes up only a few square feet of ground space yet packs in tons of beauty and interest. In early summer, pink flower clusters top the branches. This is definitely a plant that will make passers-by ask, "what is that?!" If you want berries to form on this elderberry, you need to plant a different variety to pollinate it - you can choose from Black Lace, Black Beauty, and Instant Karma. Plant them anywhere within 50' of another, though closer is preferable to ensure best pollination. Both plants will get berries. *Berries should only be used for ornamental purposes, not to be ingested.

How To Grow

Soil: Not finicky about soil, as long as it is well drained. Tolerates occasional wetness and dryness.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day) to part shade (4-6 hrs of sun/day).The warmer the climate, the more beneficial shade becomes.
Water: Average.
Space: 2-4' apart, depending on your ultimate goal for the plant.
Fertilizing: Little needed. Apply a granular rose fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Winterizing: A good 2-3" layer of mulch is recommended; nothing else is needed.
Maintenance & Pruning: Avoid cutting plants back/trimming them; rather, prune out branches selectively to attain desired shape. If you want to have berries on your plant, you will need to plant another elderberry of the same species within 50' of this one. Not recommended for hot climates.

Well it's still alive but it's not growing has not made any progress it's still only about I don't know six or seven inches tall and that's it.

Hello! Thank you for leaving feedback. When transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. We hope this helps. Happy Gardening!

Beautiful

I purchased 4 last summer, neglected them, and didn't get a chance to plant. I was sure I killed them over winter, but they are growing beautifully now. They doubled in size since spring began. I'm so happy.

Arrived in poor condition

I too question how this can be easy to grow. It wasn’t in good condition when it arrived and I was able to keep it barely alive for months, it finally died in the fall. I don’t lose many plants, probably because I plant them in the conditions called for in the description. Looking back I probably should have complained immediately or potted it over the summer.

Edited 4-18-22 It lives! But there were no wood at all so it is making it’s entrance in the form of leaves growing at ground level. I don’t don’t know what I will have when it is all said and done.
