More Information

Description Invincibelle Mini Mauvette® hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) is only 3 feet tall, but it makes a huge impact in the garden. If you thought you didn't have room for a hydrangea, think again - this native beauty fits almost anywhere! Deep pink-mauve blooms are held up on sturdy stems (no flopping, even after a rainstorm!) and bloom for 12+ weeks offering bold contrast to the deep green foliage and a limitless supply of blooms. The best part about Invincibelle Mini Mauvette hydrangea is that it flowers on new wood (growth created in the current season). As a result, these plants bloom reliably each year, no matter how cold the winter is. Those in cold climates (Zone 4) can finally enjoy a hydrangea without worry! This plant is incredibly resilient and unaffected by poor pruning, making it perfect for gardeners of any skill level. Details Botanical name: Hydrangea arborescens 'NCHA7'
Patent #: USPP 30,358
Common name: Smooth Hydrangea
Zone:4-8
Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun), to Part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x width: 2.5-3' x 2.5-3'
Flower color: Pink-mauve
Foliage color: Green
Bloom time: Summer thru fall
Features: Space savers, proven winners, native, heat tolerant, cold tolerant
Uses: Background, foundation planting, hedge, massing, ornamental, specimen.
How To Grow Soil: Any average, well-drained soil will do. Avoid wet conditions. Can tolerate somewhat dry conditions but flowering may be compromised. A good 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch keeps roots cool and conserves moisture.
Light: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the north, but benefit from afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. In the South, plants require afternoon shade. If plants wilt frequently, that's a good indicator that the spot is a bit too sunny. If flower color is pale, or stems are weak, that indicates the site is a bit too shady.
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet.
Spacing: 2 - 4 ft.
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with a granular fertilizer formulated for roses.
Winterizing: Leave intact over winter and keep 2-3" mulch in place.
Maintenance & Pruning: This variety blooms on new wood. In late winter or early spring, cut stems back by about one-third their total height, which builds a strong woody base while also encouraging abundant new growth for lots of flowers and a lush, full look. Young plants may be transplanted when dormant in early spring if desired.

My first order from Great Garden Plants!

I never ordered plants online before and was a little nervous how it would go. But when I got these plants, I knew my skepticism was unjustified. The plants were healthy, vibrant, bushy, full, nice and green. I was impressed with the fantastic packaging. They arrived right when they said they would. I followed directions for a period of rest, then planted. In the month or so they have been in the ground, our weather was crazy. We went from freezing cold to 96 degrees in 3 weeks! In between we had a deluge of rain for days on end! These plants made it through it all just fine. I covered them during the freezing weather, and have been keeping them moist, well watered and mulched in the heat wave. I hope I am not overdoing with the water but they are on the west side and get full afternoon hot sun. Because of where I planted them, I think I will have to keep them well watered in for the remainder of their lives. I am just wondering if anyone sees this is it possible to over water in these conditions? I know the plants are moist, but not standing in water.
