Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description Double Play® Candy Corn® spiraea (Spiraea japonica) offers an ever-changing medley of foliage color, from bright candy apple red to candy corn orange and yellow-green; this deciduous shrub is a welcome color in the landscape, which is often dominated by green. Summer foliage color is determined by exposure, where leaves are darker in part shade, but a bright, cheerful yellow in sunny exposures. Butterfly loving dark purple flowers offer another jolt of color in late spring and early summer. A pleasing mounded form, it grows quickly to 18-24" tall and wide. No pruning is required, making it perfect for brightening up low-maintenance gardens. Plus, it's fairly adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and drought tolerant once established. Color performs admirably in high heat. Deer & Rabbits tend not to nibble. Not really satisfied

It came in not good condition, particularly dry because of long time sipping. I was planting it right away and now I don’t know if it’s alive or no, because outside cold and plants look with out foliage like die. We’ll see it when will be spring time.

Off to a Good Start

I ordered 2 candy corn spirea plants. They arrived when it was still very hot and dry in my 8b location. Both plants were very tiny and fragile in their quart pots. I immediately replanted them to a 1 gallon pot and checked on them daily along with plenty of water. They started to grow and fill out nicely. It was very easy to monitor the growth because all the new foliage is red! After living in their new pots and growing for about 6-8 weeks I went ahead and planted them in my landscape. They are doing great! They have put on a lot more new growth and seem to love their new home next to my Agapanthus. I’m happy that they are going strong and hopefully put on a nice show next season. They have to get ready for a lot of heat and sunshine in my garden.

My double play doing very well. Have it wrapped in chicken wire to keep deer from nibbling. Ones I planted last year grew like crazy & deer ate all the blossoms off so had to wrap them too, darn deer.

Unimpressed

I’ve been extremely happy with all the plants purchased through Great Garden Plants until now. I have ordered 3 and they just didn’t thrive and stalled. So I ordered 3 more to replace and they too have stalled and just look sad. Planted in part sun and on drip irrigation. The Double Play Doozie’s planted this Spring have already doubled in size and look extremely happy.

Hello! Thank you for leaving us feedback. It is so hard to say for certain why you are not seeing a much growth as you'd like. It sounds like you are doing a great job caring for your new plants. Perhaps you're familiar with the old saying about plants: first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously.
