More Information

Description When it comes to black foliage plants, Primo® ‘Black Pearl’ coral bells (Heuchera) from Proven Winners is the supreme! Add some drama to the garden with this hardy and colorful ground cover perennial. You'll find its low-growing form very appealing with an attractive mounded habit and dense jet black leaves that spray out flat so you can best appreciate the color. Thought heucheras were just for the shade? This cultivar has been trialed in containers in full sun, where it thrives. No perennial garden is complete without a few heucheras dotted around the landscape. They are widely adaptable to various soil types and temperature extremes and keep their good looks from spring-fall. Only 8-10 inches tall and 18" wide, so it fits almost anywhere. Try planting it in combination planters, mixed beds, or in masses! Details Botanical name: Heuchera 'Black Pearl'
Patent #: USPP 29,395
Common name: Coral bells
Zone: 4 - 9
Sun exposure: Full sun (>6 hrs. direct sun) part-sun (4-6 hours sun) to full shade (< 4 hours sun)
Height x width: 8-10" X 18-20"
Flower color: White
Foliage color: Black
Season of interest: Spring through fall
Bloom time: Midsummer
Features: Rare & unusual, rabbit resistant, proven winners, native, heat tolerant, native, heat tolerant, drought tolerant, deer resistant, cold tolerant, best sellers, best for beginners
Uses: Accent, alpine and rock garden, border, containers, edging, ground cover, massing, small spaces, under planting, woodland
How To Grow Soil: Coral bells like a neutral to slightly acid soil pH, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas.
Light: As a general rule, Heucheras do well in the shade, but some morning sun will bring out more intense coloring. Too much light will cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not consistently wet to prevent root rot. To reduce the risk of foliar disease, water Heuchera during the early morning so excess moisture can evaporate by evening.
Spacing: 18 - 20" apart
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is generally unnecessary unless the soil is nutrient depleted. Consider applying compost to provide nutrients and organic matter. Avoid any fertilization in fall and winter.
Winterizing: Winter mulching will prevent the freezing and thawing that can kill plant roots.
Maintenance & pruning: Cut back the entire flower stalk after flowering to put the plant's energy into growing more leaves. Divide coral bells every 3-5 years to keep them from dying out in the center.

'Black Peral" Coral Bells are great!

I received and planted these about as late as possible for my zone. As with others I've bought, they "took" immediately and are thriving and looking great!

Never buy online

These for the most part were DOA. The same plant purchased at a local nursery and planted 30 inches away are thriving.

Hello! We apologize you received your plants not up to our standards. As we try our best to provide exceptional service, some factors like shipping and handling are outside of our control, and issues like this can sometimes happen.

Keep in mind, there can be variations in environmental conditions, even when the spacing seems minimal. There is some condition between the two of them that is making the spot a bit less favorable for growth than the other. It could be that it gets less sun, or that the roots are too warm or getting too much/too little water.

Please email pictures of the plant to claims@greatgardenplants.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible. Rest assured, we do have a 60-day guarantee on all of our plants. If you received your plants within that timeframe, we will be happy to apply your warranty once we receive the pictures. Happy Gardening!

Black pearl coral bells

I had ordered 3 of these coral bells and they all arrived looking very healthy. I planted them all within a short amount of time and they were all thriving well. Well about a week after planting two of them started to turn brown on the outside of their leaves and then the 3rd one ended up being eaten by some sort of critter. Thankfully the critter didn't eat all of the rooting system and it is now slowly growing back. The other two are still brown leaved but I'm hoping when they come back next year they will be better.
