More Information

Description Lush, green summer foliage transitions to a vibrant red in the fall, making Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) a popular clinging vine. Short tendrils easily grip surfaces, making climbing a breeze. Plant near walls, trellises, arbors, or fences to create a gorgeous backdrop for your garden. It also serves as a groundcover. While Boston ivy is known for the leaves, it also grows small green blooms and dark-colored berries that attract birds. We love how quickly this perennial grows. If left alone, it will grow up to 50 feet tall! Let this plant rule your landscape, or keep it in control with annual pruning and sheering. Details Botanical Name: Parthenocissus tricuspidata
Common Name: Boston Ivy
Zone: 4 - 8
Sun Exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x Width: 30-50' x 5-10'
Flower Color: Green
Foliage Color: Dark green, orange, red
Season of interest: Summer through fall
Uses: Cottage gardening, ground cover, privacy, erosion control, vines and climbers
How To Grow Soil: Well-drained, loamy soil
Light: Sun to part-sun
Water: Water needs are average.
Spacing: Vines are vigorous and rapid growers and can grow to 50 ft high and 10 ft wide, so space generously.
Fertilizing: While fertilizing is unnecessary, if you have infertile soil, you may apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring as new growth develops.
Winterizing: Boston ivy winter care is minimal and consists primarily of pruning. Young vines may appreciate extra mulching, but they are generally hardy.
Maintenance & Pruning: Prune the vines once each year (in late winter) to control the rapid growth. The vines respond well to pruning, so have no fear!

Good not great

I want to give this rating 5 stars for the customer service (had 2/3 plants arrive almost dead and they quickly sent replacements), however, all 3 of the plants have struggled and seemed hard to keep alive. I’ve followed planting and care instructions and it seems like all of the plants aren’t wanting to keep alive.

Hello! Thank you for leaving a review. We'd be happy to help diagnose the problem, but it's hard for us to tell without more information and photos of the plant. We'd be happy to help out if you send us some photos to info@greatgardenplants.com. Make sure that your plants are getting enough water. This tends to be the most common problem during the summer heat and with newly planted plants. New plants will need a lot more water than the more mature plants in your garden. We look forward to hearing from you and helping your plants thrive in your garden. Happy Gardening!

I only meant 3 stars

See my review below regarding the resemblance to poison ivy. I hit submit before changing my star rating. Not 5 stars, sadly. Only 3

Hello! Boston ivy (Parthenoicissus tricuspidata) takes on many different leaf forms, which means they can often be misidentified. Mature plants tend to have a single leaf with three lobes on it, while juvenile plants have leaves that are compound with three leaflets! As your plant grows and matures, the leaf form will show more of a mature lobed shape. To learn more about it, you can check out https://www.bostonivy.net/ We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused and hope you still enjoy your plants! Happy Gardening!

Poison Ivy's virtuous twin?

I have to do a double take with these plants as they resemble poison ivy so much! I'm surprised it's not mentioned or spoken about in the reviews here. It turned me off at first and I almost decided to pull it (I have lots of poison ivy and don't fancy cultivating a lookalike), but I am giving it a chance to cover an arch trellis in a very shady spot in my part-shade garden. It seems like only the base part of the plant looks like PI and the vines have a different leaf all together. I'm hoping it will climb fast and win me over - it's really tough to find anything that isn't invasive to climb the shady trellis I have. I had high hopes for the Boston Ivy, so we'll see.

Took a chance,…well worth it

I read other peoples reviews about bad packaging, but I still took the chance, I’m glad I did! The packaging was excellent, each plant was well wrapped with foam barriers to protect it during transport and each one was in its own isolated cardboard housing and they had been watered well. The plants were healthy and I was happy with the size of the plants. Each plant survived and has been transferred and is thriving.
