Carex pennsylvanica Description

Carex pennsylvanica is a  remarkable deer proof, drought tolerant groundcover for shade and a suitable lawn replacement with low maintainance needs!

Many homeowners struggle with growing grass beneath oaks and pines. Mature trees out-compete grasses for water and nutrients. Large, woody roots are often apparent right on the soil surface under oaks, making it difficult to grow. A solution is to use a lawn alternative such as Carex pennsylvanica.

Carex pennsylvanica has slightly arching, fine-textured green blades that spreading slowly to create a lush semi-evergreen carpet growing 8-10" high. Clusters of brown seed capsules appear in spring. Sedges are close relatives of grasses and look a lot like them and can function like a traditional lawn.

Carex pennsylvanica adapts to various soils, including loam, sandy, or acidic rich and thrives in dry and moist shade and competition from tree roots. Carex will also grow in full sun, but you'll need to provide some moisture.

Carex pannsylvanica binds the soil with its dense roots making it ideal for shady slopes.

This low maintenance shade groundcover is great for areas where one wants a lawn feel - but growing turf isn't feasible.

This shade loving ornamental grass is stunning as an underplanting or edging to hydrangeas, hostas, or hellebores.

Arrived shaken out of pot. 3" plug of Carex in a quart pot of potting mix. Quite healthy, but very much smaller than it should have been.

Wonderful plants.

I just wanted to thank you for the amazing and beautiful, excellent quality plants I received from you. The front of my home faces northand I can never find beautiful shade plants in my local nurseries. The only mildly interesting plants I could ever find were Hostas. That is,until I find your website! I was so shocked that so many beautiful plants and flowers were available for shade! I've ordered plants online before and have always been disappointed. Ieither receive bare root plants that are dead by the time I receive them, or they're packaged so badly they arrive crushed and mangled, or they're so tiny they rarely take and when they do it takes forever to grow into something you can see. I was so shocked and surprised how beautiful the plants were that you shipped me! They were packaged really well, they were established, they were moist and in awesome condition! Thank you so much for providing such quality plants! You have earned yourself a customer for life! Keep up the great work and know that your efforts are appreciated. I feel it's important to let companies know when they're doing a great job and you guys are doing a STELLAR job. (And I've told ALL my friends and neighbors about your site!)
