Heuchera Dolce® 'Silver Gumdrop' Description

Heucheras are colorful groundcover foliage plants and Silver Gumdrop has some of the most beautiful silver leaves. This stunning semi-evergreen coral bells is anything but basic with its unmatched style and fun color!  You'll find this low growing form very appealing as a small to midsize foliage plant with attractive habit and stately leaves that spray out flat so you can best appreciate the color.

Plants with silver foliage are valuable to the landscape since they combine so well with anything and highlight other plants in your garden. Silver Gumdrop will fulfill some wishes for a sparkling style!

Early spring reddish-silver new leaves quickly turn silver with distinctive veining. Silver Gumdrop gets only 6-10" tall spreading to about 16-20". In early summer it is adorned with pink blooms that reach 20" tall that attract pollinators.  Long stalks make terrific cut flowers.

Here's what you'll love about Silver Gumdrop:

  • Spot it where it receives morning sun and afternoon shade or grow in partial shade. They love soft shade!
  • Low maintenance ground cover
  • During the course of the season you'll find the sun slightly burning off the silver overlay with eye catching purple pigment highlights appearing. What a contrast-especially in flower!
  • More compact than other types - so it fits well into smaller spaces
  • It's adorable size and tailored look is perfect for container combos
  • Silver injects color into dull shaded spots. Use as an edging to buxus, line a shaded path, combine it with your favorite annual, pair with hosta or viola.
  • Just gorgeous when paired with other colorful heucheras!  (we are fond of combining with Forever Purple or Obsidian)

Heuchera prefer a rich, humus, moisture retentive soil. Take care not to bury the crown as it should sit at the soil line. They have moderate moisture needs.  Heucheras are not heavy feeders and have low fertilizer requirements.

Soil: Coral bells like a neutral to slightly acid soil pH, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas. They do well in soil where some organic matter has been added.
Light: As a general rule, Heucheras do well in shade, but for the highly colored varieties, some morning sun will bring out more intense coloring. The color can wash out in full sun, and too much heat and light can cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Average -- better too dry than too wet when established. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not consistently wet to prevent root rot. To reduce the risk of foliar disease, Heuchera require watering during the early morning so any excess moisture can evaporate before evening. Drip irrigation effectively delivers moisture directly to the soil, further reducing the plant's vulnerability to disease.
Spacing: 1.5 ft
Fertilizing: Use good quality compost, or well aged livestock manure, or a combination of the two. Apply a few pounds for each plant, each year or two. On poor soils, top dress every year or every other year on moderate quality soils. Spreading a 2-inch layer of mulch over the soil surrounding Heuchera helps insulate the soil during winter, and improve moisture retention. About 3 inches of space between the plant's crown and the mulch allows air circulation, which prevents rotting and disease. Replenishing the mulch throughout the year ensures proper winter protection, and hinders the establishment of competitive weeds.  Heuchera does not require fertilization during the fall or winter months.
Winterizing: Winter mulching will prevent the freezing and thawing that can heave plants roots.
Maintenance & Pruning: Cut back the entire flower stalk after flowering to put the plants energy into growing more leaves.  Divide Coral bells every 3-5 years to keep them from dying out in the center.
