Viburnum Blue Muffin® Description

CLAY SOIL BUSTER! - Ultra-hardy, deer resistant shrub makes an easy screen or hedge plant that birds love!

When it comes to shrubs, its hard to find ones that are so adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions including clay soil, black walnut trees and high winds while providing ornamental value throughout most of the year!

Viburnums are extra-rugged deciduous shrubs that flower heavily and fruit readily (with a pollinator plant - another viburnum dentatum type). Growing 5-7 feet high and wide with upright, multi-stemmed form with some suckering flat white flowers clusters  in late spring. In late summer, intense deep blue fruit clusters begin to appear and persist thru winter that are loved by birds and butterflies. 4" glossy oval shaped glossy green leaves give way to a colorful purple fall color.

Blue Muffin makes a wonderful screen or hedge plant. Plant in groups of 3 or 5 if you need to shield a view from a neighbor or want a salt tolerant shrub near a road.   As they get bigger - you can prune them up from the bottom and plant your favorite shade plants.

GROWING TIPS

  • Thrives in sun or shade
  • Adaptable! Tolerates dry, moist or wet sites
  • Space 4 feet apart
  • Little or no maintenance needed
  • Blooms on old wood - so if you elect to prune - this needs to be done after flowering
  • Not bothered by insect or diseases

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Not terribly fussy about soil type. Lightly acid, is preferred.
Light: Full sun to part shade (depending on species). Most do best with some shade from the hot afternoon sun.
Water: Average water needs. Provide regular watering for at least the first two summers to help them get established. Most do best with supplemental water during summer.
Spacing: Plant 6-8 feet apart
Fertilizing: Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. You can also mulch once per year with good compost if you are a bit lazy about fertilizing.
Winterizing: No special winter care is needed
Maintenance & Pruning: Prune with a light hand on doublefile varieties, as they do not like pruning. Prune spring flowering shrubs right after bloom, and summer flowering in February or March. For best fruiting/berries, plant multiple varieties for cross pollination. Best Pollinators for Blue Muffin (an early bloomer) are "Chicago Lustre" , "Red Feather", "Cardinal", "Crimson Tide", "Red Regal" and "Perle Bleu"
