More Information

Description Rapido Blue bellflower (Campanula carpatica) brings a wealth of color and charm to the garden. It grows in a compact, low cushion mound of small green leaves with wavy edges. By early summer, cup-shaped "open bells" completely smother the foliage. These soft blue flowers bloom four weeks earlier than other Campanulas and last throughout summer. Rapido Blue bellflower is an ideal sun perennial groundcover. It's low maintenance and deer resistant, making it easy to grow, even for beginners. Tuck it in the front of the border, in front of shrubs, containers, rock gardens, or any other small spaces! Details Botanical name: Campanula carpatica
Common name: Bellflower, harebell
Zone: 3 - 8
Sun exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Soil moisture: Average, Moist
Height x width: 5-7" X 5-8"
Flower color: Blue
Foliage color: Green
Season of interest: Summer - fall
Bloom time: Late spring - late summer
Features: Suitable for slopes, rain gardens, low flammability, heat tolerant, deer resistant, cold tolerant
Uses: Border, containers, edging, erosion control, foundation planting, ground cover, massing, rock garden, slopes, specimen
How To Grow Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil. Will tolerate average soil and clay if well-drained.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun). Afternoon shade is beneficial in warmer climates.
Water: Average water needs. Prefers consistently moist, but not wet soil.
Spacing: 5 -8 inches
Fertilizing: Generally unnecessary is average to rich soils. A spring application of slow-release fertilizer, such as osmocote, can be applied if desired.
Winterizing: Many perennials will grow new leaves around the base of the plant after flowering. These should be left on the plant in the fall, as they protect the crown. Clean off old foliage in early spring as new growth emerges.
Maintenance & pruning: Will continue blooming for weeks if spent blossoms are regularly removed. Plants should be divided every 2 to 4 years, in spring or fall. A summer mulching is important to keep the roots cool.

Incorrect Sunlight Description

I ordered 18 of these a couple years ago. After they settled in, the second year they did great. Subsequent years they were leggy and eventually died out despite adequate care. I ordered and planted another 16 replacement plants this year (double-checking their light and water needs, etc.), and they are already leggy and unhappy in full sun. Now that I use an app that tells me how often to water them, I got a warning that this type of plant shouldn’t be in full sun. Had I known that, I would’ve have ordered these for my front yard. These are taking extra care to keep them alive and they are still unhappy. This was not a great planting experience, although customer service for other plants have been great. My backyard (part sun) spaces with these have been much better.
