Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

  How To Grow Soil: Moist, well-drained soil is best. Primroses cannot handle drought for any sustained period; however, their tight, ground-hugging rosettes of leaves can rot if soil is excessively wet or soggy. Rich, dark soils yield the best results.
Light: Partial sun to shade -- Primula will benefit from dappled sun exposure; afternoon shade is imperative in hot summers.
Water: Plants will go dormant in hot, dry summer weather unless they are kept well-watered. Mulching will help the soil retain moisture.
Spacing: 12 inches
Fertilizing: Apply a granular garden fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Winterizing: A good 2-3" layer of shredded bark is recommended. Check plants in late winter and remove any ice or snow lingering in the rosette to minimize the risk of rot.
Maintenance & Pruning: Little to no maintenance is required. Add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture.

Did not survive

They wilted and dried up on me, even with constant watering

Would order again

Growing well, getting new leaves but no blooms as of yet

Hello! Thank you for leaving a review. We're happy to hear that your primrose is growing well. Keep in mind that when transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. We hope this helps. Happy Gardening!

Less than thrilled

I was so looking forward to receiving these, especially since the variety of color was highly touted. The plants are fine. Three out of four are thriving and one straight-out died. But most disappointingly, I received two wine-colored plants and two white ones. Not exactly the “colorful selection of rainbow colors” that were advertised! I prefer the four primroses that I picked up 2/$4 at my local grocery store. They were colors I chose (a rainbow of them!) and are still blossoming like crazy.
