Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Seems to be thriving.
I purchased 21 Dandy Man Rododendron plants. There were three different colors. I planted them in a rotating color pattern. Every one of the purple onesmhave had to be replaced?? I do not understand what is different about this color.I just received two replacement plants and I do not think they are going to live either. Is there something different with this particular color rhododendron?

I am very pleased with these plants. They were healthy and well packaged for shipping
My first order of rhododendron was a disappointment since the plants arrived almost dead. I sent an email and I received a new order. These are thriving ! Thank you.
I received the first one (which said would grow in our zone) and it was in bad shape. I was sent a new, healthy looking one which I promptly put in the shade. Two days later it was almost dead. No, it didn't need to be watered (I know how to take care of plants). Our heat and humidity was horrible that week and I think it just couldn't take it. Maybe it shouldn't state in the description that it can grow in zone 9a.
