Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

I really wanted this plant. I also ordered lavender plants which were lovely but the Chinese Astilbe was so dry and brittle, it had to be in its death throes when it was packaged. There was a little green at the base of the plant that promptly died with a couple of days. The picture was taken immediately after I removed it from the box. I’m very disappointed.

They were the most healthy, beautiful plants I ever purchased on line. Sadly, the deer ate them the next day. I set up netting around what was left and two of the three survived a month and now only one is left. I thought they were deer resistant.
Hello! Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that you've had trouble with deer. Astilbe are relatively deer resistant. However, no plant is 100% deer proof. When food is scare in an area, deer will resort to plants that they rarely damage. We recommend a deer repellant spray for plants that are being damaged by deer. Depending on how much damage has been done, they astilbe may bounce back this year or next year. We do have a 60-day guarantee on all of our plants. If you received your plants within that timeframe, we will be happy to apply your warranty once we receive the pictures. https://www.greatgardenplants.com/pages/our-guarantee Happy Gardening!
Plants arrived healthy well packed very happy with the purchase. Growing well among my Japanese maples.
Especially well packed, very healthy plants, growing now vigorously and well performing all with timely delivery….I was leery of getting mail-order plants as in past From other vendors have had very poor luck…but…I wanted this particular hard to find dwarf version of astilbe so decided to give you a try…..I am so glad I did
I had never ordered from this company before, so I had a very pleasant surprise when my box of Astilbes arrived! They were all in such excellent shape, it was amazing! It took me quite a bit of time to find plants for a shady area, with only 2’ between the sidewalk and the house, and I think that these Dwarf Chinese Astilbes are going to work really well! Two of the plants already have buds, so I’m hoping to see some blossoms very soon!
