Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

El Niño® chitalpa, or desert orchid, has been rapidly growing in popularity among gardeners, and for good reason. Plants arrived in perfect condition. Bigger than I expected. Nice healthy color. Will definitely order other items. Highly recommend.
I purchased 3 Chitalpas fall of 2024 and received my ‘little stick in pots’ as scheduled. I left them in the pots awhile before deciding to hold them over in a bed til spring. It was a rough winter so imagine my total surprise when I noticed all three were sprouting healthy leaves in March!! I planted 1 the center of 2 mirroring beds flanking an entrance walkway to a that will block sun on a hot west facing porch. And being deciduous they’ll allow the sun to warm the porch in winter. I cannot wait to have the aroma scenting the area while enjoying the flowers and the shade they provide. The 3rd is holding and growing well in a large pot for an undetermined location but leaning toward between the master bedroom/bathroom window area to enjoy. It shouldn’t be such a difficult decision which area gets the 3rd Chitalpa … so obviously I’m going to need more!!!
Just received, then planted them (2) about two weeks ago. Arrived in excellent, healthy shape and are doing well - still healthy and vibrant. Just a little too early to give a full review.
It arrived properly trimmed down and has doubled in size so far! This poor little guy was manhandled by the carrier and I thought maybe it wouldn’t make it. Thankfully, I was wrong and it’s thriving. I’d been wanting to try this plant for awhile and I’m so happy I did.
They did a great job shipping a very healthy plant.
