More Information

Description The texture and versatility of Gracillimus Maiden Grass (Miscanthus sinensis) make it an easy choice for any garden! Long, thin green blades sway in the breeze from spring to fall. Purple and copper fans open to spikelets that mature to stunning silvery plumes at the start of fall. Growing 5-7 feet tall, it serves as an excellent hedge plant. You can use them in the back of borders, in drifts, as specimens, or next to water features. Plus, they're durable, so you won't have to worry about drought or deer! Details Botanical name: Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus'
Common name: Maiden grass
Zone: 5 - 9
Sun exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x width: 5-7' X 3-6'
Flower color: Copper
Foliage color: Green
Season of interest: Spring through fall
Uses: Accent, Border, Foundation planting, Massing, Ornamental, Specimen
How To Grow Soil: Easily grown in average, medium, well-draining soil.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun). They tend to flop when grown in too much shade.
Water: Average. Prefers moist soils, but once established, it's drought tolerant.
Spacing: 3 - 6 ft.
Fertilizing: Too much fertilizer can lead to lodging or flopping over. The best time for applying fertilizer, if needed, is in the spring as growth is resuming.
Winterizing: Leave foliage standing throughout winter for visual interest. Substantial clumps tend to flop (or collapse when subjected to heavy winter snows) and often benefit from some support.
Maintenance & pruning: Cut foliage to a 6 to 12-inch-tall mound of stubble in late winter before new shoots appear. Mature clumps of 'Gracillimus' (3-4 years +) produce substantial foliage, which sometimes needs support. Older clumps tend to die in the center leading to an unattractive shape and appearance. Dividing every third year is a safe rule of thumb.

Like other reviewers, my grasses arrive looking ok, but after carefully planting, watering in full Sun, no growth at all after 4-6 weeks.

Hello! Thank you for leaving us a review. We can assure you that your grasses are growing, even if you cannot see it. Perhaps you're familiar with the old saying about plants: first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. Continue to care for your plants and you will see growth above the soil in time. Happy Gardening!

Not any new growth since I planted them

The grass arrived healthy looking but despite frequent watering and full sun, they have not grown at all. :( Hoping they are just slow to grow the first year?
