Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description If you had Midnight Wine®, it's time to switch to Midnight Wine Shine™ (Weigela florida). This improved selection offers better blooms, nicer foliage, and better hardiness than it's previous counterpart. Offering the darkest foliage of any weigela, this shrub makes a statement. It's almost black! Leaves emerge with a distinctive wavy edge that also provides great texture.  It flowers better than Midnight Wine, but it is mostly grown for it's foliage. Its dramatic foliage more than makes up for its lack of blooms.  Plant this unique weigela from Proven Winners as a ground cover, edging, or container plant. We recommend pairing it with perennials, ground covers, or other low-growing shrubs to really help its deeply colorful foliage pop.  How To Grow Soil: Grow in any moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates some dryness once established.

Maintenance & Pruning: Weigela bloom on old wood so should only be pruned after blooming. Once plants are mature (after at least 5 years in the ground), you may want to remove a few of the oldest stems each year to keep it producing vigorous young growth.
Note: weigela are one of the last shrubs to leaf out in spring, so don't panic if you aren't seeing signs of life even if everything else in your yard has started to grow.

Maybe tagged wrong

I've ordered Weigela on here before and the ones I with this got with this order don't look like the midnight wine shine. The leaves are light green, maybe it was in a low light situation but I really think this is different variety that I have. I'm bummed because I wanted to add to the one I already have growing. I kind of reins the look of the drift I was creating.

great color and form

Planted this last spring, they did very well, stayed compact but full with nice purple color that changed later summer to a brown-purple. Considering their on the east side of my house they did quite well. I have six other varieties of Weigela and this and My Monet are my favorites.

Small but healthy plants

Purchased 3 of these and planted about 2 months ago. Zone 7a in northern Delaware and they seem to be doing well. I have them in an area that receives afternoon shade. I fed with extended release fertilizer at planting time. They don't seem to need much care. They don't appear to get stressed when we haven't had any rain. No insect problems and the bunnies leave them alone.
